Syringe Probes
Syringe Probes

Travis Goodspeed had a great idea in his blog and accompanying Flickr photostream: modify a syringe for use in probing small component leads. I ordered some syringes from Amazon through a pet supplier ($0.17/USD each) and found some 10 lb frame-hanging wire which, when untwisted, fit just inside of the syringe to make an electrical connection. This wire then connects to a pair of LED's wired together to light with the direction of the current with a trailing lead hooked into a small incision on the plunger to keep it steady.
Since the syringe needle is so sharp, it easily digs into a little solder mask and stays steady with little pressure. It's also very convenient for reversing boards when mapping out leads with a multi-meter. I'm quite pleased, and think I'll be using these for more in the future, including the mystery project I'll be debuting at SANS2009 in Orlando, March 1 - 9, where I'll be teaching the Wireless Ethical Hacking course, including material on exploiting proprietary wireless hardware devices.
Thanks Travis!
